Siderarium: a macrocosmic clock of the present moment
macrocosmic clock visually tracking the astrological energy of the moment · working paper · v0.8 · october 2026
Siderarium draws the sky of the present moment as a living mandala. Through synesthesia we wanted an instrument that conveys, in a multi-sensory experience, the astrological energy of the hour: its colour, its geometry, its chord. The dial captures the moment and its vibration, so that it can be seen, heard, kept as an image and returned to. For practitioners of the Arts it is also a timing tool: the light at the centre, the guardians of the hour and the windows of the coming day show when a working finds the sky ready.
1 · CONCEPT
- How the sky becomes a figure. The positions of the planets are computed from an ephemeris. Classical astrology reads the angles between them as aspects: the trine at 120°, the square at 90°, the sextile at 60°. Kepler showed that these angles are the divisions of the circle by its regular polygons [16]. Siderarium takes that literally: an aspect of k·360/n is drawn as the star polygon {n/k} [15], so a trine becomes a triangle, a square a square, a quintile a pentagram. The ruling aspect gives the central figure; the others stand fainter behind it.
- Each planet brings its number, its tincture and its light: Saturn the three, the Sun the six, Mercury the eight; gold, silver and the King scale of colours; a glow that follows its dignity and strength at that hour. Soft aspects bend the edges and chain circles, hard aspects keep the lines straight. The mandala that results is the key to the present moment: a pattern that exists only now and can be traced, line by line, to a rule and a source.
- The design descends from the astronomical clocks of §2.1 and borrows the functional discipline of haute horlogerie: a dial on which every mark earns its place, a chapter ring, applied Roman numerals, the Moon shown in its phase, and nothing that does not read. One astrological factor drives one visual channel.
- The figure at the centre is a yantra in the literal sense, an instrument. In the Western talismanic tradition an image made at a chosen moment holds that moment [4, 5, 6]; the sigil layer lets it be copied by hand.
- The title of the moment, one line under the dial. First whether this is a time to work, to watch or to rest, read from the Moon's condition by Lilly's rules and from the strength of the figure. Then the stage of life the hour serves, the house the Moon stands in, one of twelve words from Body to Occult; the houses as stages of life are Manilius and Lilly, the Moon's house as the matter of an election is Agrippa. Then the mode, one of the three mother letters of the Sefer Yetzirah: Aleph, air, ideation while the ruling aspect applies; Mem, water, manifestation once it is exact; Shin, fire, destruction when the aspect is hard or the portal is cut. Then the angel of the hour. The three states and the reading of the mothers are this instrument's
[SD].
- The core is one tradition, the Renaissance; two modern layers are added and declared. Rules invented for this instrument are marked
[SD].
2 · BACKGROUND
2.1 Mechanical cosmic clocks
- Antikythera mechanism, c. 2nd–1st century BCE: geared Sun, Moon and eclipse cycles [24].
- Su Song's astronomical clock tower, Kaifeng, 1088–1092 [26].
- Giovanni Dondi's Astrarium, Padua, 1364: one dial for each of the seven planets [25].
- Prague Orloj, 1410: an astrolabe dial with day, twilight and night fields. The Sun on its hand inspires the placement of bodies by altitude here.
- The astronomical complications of modern haute horlogerie: Ludwig Oechslin's Astrolabium Galileo Galilei for Ulysse Nardin (1985) and its Planetarium and Tellurium; Christiaan van der Klaauw's planetaria; the celestial charts of Patek Philippe (ref. 5102, 2002) and Vacheron Constantin. From them Siderarium takes the dial discipline: chapter ring, applied numerals, the Moon in its aperture, a finish that serves the reading.
2.2 The Renaissance synthesis
- Astrology: Ptolemy [1] through Lilly [3]: dignities, terms, faces, the solar phases, the planetary hours.
- Kabbalah entered Latin Europe in the same generation: Pico della Mirandola's theses (1486) [29], Reuchlin's De arte cabalistica (1517) [30], and Agrippa's third book (1533), which sets the Sephiroth, the divine names and the angelic orders beside the planetary spheres [4]. The Tree as drawn today is Kircher's (1652) [31].
- Planetary magic: the Picatrix [5], Ficino [6], the Heptameron [7], Agrippa's magic squares and the 28 mansions of the Moon [4].
- The Golden Dawn (1888–) [10], Crowley [9], Fortune [11] and Case [12] are later layers. Two of them are used here as declared windows (§3.9).
2.3 Visual lineage
- Itten's twelve-step colour circle and his harmonic chords [13]; Albers on colour interaction [14].
- Frieda Harris's projective backgrounds for the Thoth Tarot [27], after George Adams's projective geometry [28].
- Rose-engine guilloché and intaglio engraving: light as line weight.
3 · METHODS
3.1 Ephemeris and frame
- Astronomy Engine 2.1.19 [18]: positions to about one arcminute. Tropical zodiac, true ecliptic of date, geocentric longitudes. The Moon's altitude is topocentric.
- Ascendant and MC from the local sidereal time and the obliquity [17]. Checked against the horizon: the Ascendant point has altitude 0.000°.
- Projection: angle = ecliptic longitude, with the Ascendant on the eastern horizon; radius = altitude. One projection for every body and for the zodiac ring.
3.2 Houses
- Current: Regiomontanus houses, Lilly's system [3]: the equator divided into twelve from the meridian, each division carried to the ecliptic by a great circle through the north and south points of the horizon. The MC is the cusp of the 10th. The regular dodecagon is the container; the cusps are drawn across it, where they fall. Equal houses and Placidus remain available for comparison (
?houses=equal, ?houses=placidus). Angularity is conjunction with an angle, within 5°.
- Under review: whole-sign (Hellenistic) [19], Regiomontanus (Lilly's system) [3], Placidus (the modern default). A quadrant system makes the frame irregular.
3.3 Condition of the planets
| factor | rule | source |
| essential dignity | domicile +5 · exaltation +4 · triplicity +3 · term +2 · face +1 · detriment −5 · fall −4 · peregrine −5 | Lilly [3]; Egyptian terms; Chaldean faces |
| mutual reception | by domicile or by exaltation; lifts the peregrine penalty | Lilly [3]; scoring [SD] |
| outer planets | no essential dignity, no number, no place on the Tree; drawn as optics | traditional consensus [1, 3, 19] |
| solar phase | cazimi < 17′ · combust < 8.5° · under the beams < 17°, every planet | [3] |
| motion | retrograde; stationary below 12% of mean speed | [SD threshold] |
3.4 Aspects and the hierarchy of figures [SD]
- Ptolemaic aspects, plus quincunx, semisquare, sesquisquare, quintiles, septiles and noviles, each with its own orb. A whole-sign aspect that does not hold by sign (29° Aries to 1° Virgo) is dissociate and takes half weight.
- power = (0.2 + 0.8·rarity) × weight × (0.3·exactness1.5 + 0.7·window) × modifiers.
- rarity = log of the pair's synodic period. window = time to exactness, not degrees: e−½(days/1.5)²; the Moon's window is 6 hours.
- Modifiers: applying ×1.2, separating ×0.8, station ×1.5, Sun involved ×1.2, angular ×1.3. Events override the score: eclipse > lunation > cazimi > exact outer contact > station.
3.5 The figure [SD]
- Each aspect is drawn as {n/k}. A conjunction is a rose with as many petals as the sum of the two planets' Sephirah numbers. An opposition, the circle halved, is two equal circles each passing through the other's centre, the vesica piscis: the first construction of Euclid's Elements (I.1). The vesica's axis lies on the two planets.
- Soft aspects bow the edges and add a circle chain; hard aspects keep straight edges and points. Each line passes from one planet's colour to the other's; the fill is their mixture.
- Size: Jupiter widens the portal, Saturn narrows it. Cut: a hard aspect from a third planet removes a wedge, pointed at that planet.
- Stars mark the points where vertices of two figures coincide. Two centred figures share gcd(n₁, n₂) vertices.
3.6 The Moon and ripeness
- Void of course: no Ptolemaic aspect to a classical planet perfects before the Moon leaves its sign. Also tested: Via Combusta (15° Libra to 15° Scorpio), combust, applying to a malefic [3]. The verdict (ripe, open, unripe, void) sets the light at the pole [SD].
- The Moon's mansion: 28 divisions of 12°51′26″ from 0° Aries, names after Agrippa II.33 [4].
3.7 Time
- The planetary day begins at local sunrise. Twelve unequal hours run from sunrise to sunset and twelve from sunset to sunrise, in Chaldean order. Angels of the days and hours from the Heptameron [7].
3.8 Windows [SD]
- Three windows, after the three mother letters of the Sefer Yetzirah [8]: ideation (aleph, air), incarnation (mem, water: descent into form), destruction (shin, fire). Earth has no mother letter, so there is no fourth.
- Each window is scored from the planets and signs of the figure, its nature (soft or hard), and the beauty of the moment: a whole figure, harmonious guardians and a ripe Moon. Destruction is scored the opposite way.
3.8b The veil [SD]
- A fourth line under the windows, dashed, on its own scale from 0 to 1: how thin the veil is. The between-times of the day (twilight at sunrise and sunset, solar midnight), the Moon's light (dark, full), her place (a water sign, a water house), her void, the hours of the Moon and of Saturn, the doors of the year (the cross-quarters, Samhain heaviest, then Beltane, Imbolc and Lammas; the solstices and equinoxes lighter), an eclipse, and Neptune on the Moon or on an angle. Each factor is a weight; they combine so that one strong cause opens the veil alone and several weak ones add up. The readout names the factors in force; the legend names the thinnest moment of the coming day.
3.9 Correspondences: a Renaissance core and two declared windows
| layer | rule | source |
| planet colour | heraldic tinctures by planet: Sun or, Moon argent, Mercury purpure, Venus vert, Mars gules, Jupiter azure, Saturn sable. Gold and silver rendered as metals. | Ferne 1586 [32]; agrees with Agrippa I.49 [4] and the GD Queen scale [10] |
| planet number | Saturn 3, Jupiter 4, Mars 5, Sun 6, Venus 7, Mercury 8, Moon 9: the Sephirah, and the order of the planet's magic square | Agrippa II.22 [4] |
| outer planets | Uranus iridescence, Neptune brilliance, Pluto lensing. No pigment, no number. | [SD] |
| window 1 · sign colour | the King scale of the paths: Aries scarlet … Pisces crimson, rendered ultraviolet. The same circle as Itten's, and as the chromatic scale (Aries = C) | Golden Dawn [10], Case [12] |
| window 2 · tarot | the 36 decans as Chaldean faces with their minor cards and Book T titles; trumps on signs and planets, Golden Dawn attribution (Strength to Leo, Justice to Libra, the Star to Aquarius) | Book T, in Regardie [10] |
| elements | air pale yellow, water deep blue, fire orange-scarlet, earth near-black brown | GD King scale of the mother letters [10] |
3.10 Birth chart and synastry
- Birth data stay on the device. The birth chart is computed as any other moment and shown as its own clock.
- Synastry: transiting planets to natal planets and angles, Ptolemaic aspects and the quincunx, orbs 6/6/5/5/3/2°, plus 1° for the luminaries. Power = weight × exactness1.5 × slowness of the transiting planet [SD]. The strongest transit becomes the figure; the nativity is drawn as an ink ring at the sky's edge.
4 · USE
| you see | it means |
| polygon of a planet | its number: Saturn 3 … Mercury 8; the Moon is drawn by its phase; gold and silver shine |
| ring around a planet | whole = domicile · doubled = exaltation · thin = minor dignity · faint = peregrine · broken = detriment · broken and drawn in = fall. Out of alignment with the core = out of tune |
| size of a planet | its power: dignity, angularity, station, part in the figure |
| blur | retrograde, or slowing toward a station |
| eclipse inside a circle | Pluto: the field goes dark under it and a corona rings its limb; stronger when angular, stationary or in the figure. Two planets in conjunction fuse into one form |
| central figure | the ruling aspect; secondary figures fainter behind it |
| white stars | points where two figures meet exactly |
| light at the pole | the Moon's verdict: warm = ripe · cold = unripe · dark = void |
| star at the pole | the guardians: day ruler and hour ruler as their planetary stars |
| flow from gold to silver | the Sun's outflow arriving in the Moon's cup; its speed follows the Moon's light |
| ink ring at the edge | your birth chart under transit; a triangle names the figure the sky is setting off in it, warm for harmony, cold for strife |
| aura outside the frame | the element of the hour: water ripples, air drifts in pale yellow, fire flickers, earth stands still with the grain of stone |
| coloured line under the dial | time to work, to watch or to rest: the Moon's condition and the figure's strength |
| title of the moment | the Moon's house as a stage of life · the mother letter of the hour · the angel of the hour |
| strip below the dial | the three windows over the next 24 hours, each named with its stage; tap a time to go there |
Turn the dial to travel in time: clockwise is forward, one turn is one day. Pinch or ctrl + scroll to zoom; double tap to reset. Run, pause and change speed from the bar below. The sigil layer isolates the figure for copying by hand. Print HD art saves a square at 2048 pixels; Wallpaper saves a portrait at this screen's size. Both carry the notice. On a phone, open the app in the browser and choose "add to home screen"; it then runs offline.
5 · LIMITATIONS
- Ephemeris accuracy is about one arcminute: the Moon's aspects can be off by a few minutes of time. Swiss Ephemeris is not used.
- The hierarchy, windows, verdict colours, sound mapping and synastry power are design rules [SD], not tradition.
- The sign colours and the Tarot are 19th–20th-century layers on a Renaissance core, declared as such. The Book T titles are translated plainly in Spanish.
- Mansion names follow Agrippa's spellings, which vary between editions.
- No effect of any figure is claimed or measured. The instrument shows the sky; it does not act on it.
6 · VALIDATION
- Ten timed historical moments were scored against 1,500 random moments at the same places, 1900–2030. Mean percentile of the ruling figure: 64 (chance = 50 ± 9; p ≈ 0.06). Five of the ten fall in the top fifth; the nuclear moments of 1942–45 score at or below chance. The sample was chosen by fame, which biases it.

[SD].
2 · ANTECEDENTES
2.1 Relojes cósmicos mecánicos
- Mecanismo de Anticitera, c. siglos II–I a.
?houses=equal, ?houses=placidus).
- potencia = (0,2 + 0,8·rareza) × peso × (0,3·exactitud1,5 + 0,7·ventana) × modificadores.
- Modificadores: aplicativo ×1,2, separativo ×0,8, estación ×1,5, Sol implicado ×1,2, angular ×1,3.
